mitt romney came on to the stage, he was able to moderate his positions, appeal to people in the middle of the country, as well as the people in the base who were excited to see him have a fighting chance and for a moment there, it did look like he was getting the upper hand in the election. >> number three, the 47% video that, that video of mitt romney saying there's a large portion of america who believe that they're victims. >> that was the devastating moment for the romney campaign and i don't think anybody who supports or was opposed to the romney campaign could argue that. it encapsulated a feeling that people had about mitt romney. the uneasiness about him and the way that he was perceived to feel about so much of the country and it really hurt him. it was helped in hurting him by the obama campaign and turning it in to a commercial. it went viral in so many ways and arguably the romney campaign never recovered from that, even with the first debate and president obama's failure to bring it up in that first debate with his pretty lackluster performance. >> number two, ranked wisco

had expected. the gop's odds on favorite, mitt romney stumbled in some of the early contests. he refused to release his tax returns allowing newt gingrich to take south carolina. >> we proved here in south carolina that people of power beats big money. >> reporter: but that big money eventually cleared the field and romney set his sights on the president. >> it's still about the economy and we're not stupid. >> reporter: at number nine, bain. not that one. that one. almost as soon as romney had had locked up the nomination, his former private investment capital was crashed by the super pac and obama campaign. the attack ads put romney on defense for months. the president also got a lip fr lift from the supreme court. romney vowed to strike it down himself. >> i'm not one that's going to get rid of obama care. >> reporter: at number seven, gas. >> governor romney, do you feel that your gas has overshadowed your foreign trips? >> reporter: or in romney's case, his entire foreign trip where a campaign aide lashed out at reporters. a gaffe that went global. and then at number sick, t

this would not be happening? mitt romney had won in november. right, because when g.o.p. is in the white house, deficits don't matter. can you tell us a little bit about the philosophies of the two candidates? well now, the president and the ex-candidate. will the situation be that much different if there was a different man in the white house? guest: well, look, it's an interesting question. it is certainly true that tax policy was one of the key sort of issues in the last election. and actually, the debate that we're having if it sounds familiar, it's because we've had it several times before. it was really a similar debate to what we had in 2008. we had the same debate in 2010. we had a similar debate in 2011 when we were dealing with the debt ceiling issue the first time around. and we dealt it with it in the last election. and the differences have always been that president obama has maintained that tax cuts should be allowed to expire for people making more than $250,000. mitt romney called for extending all the tax cuts fully. and making other changes to the tax code. but, you kno

a month of each other, the first would be a low, that first debate, a lot of folks thought mitt romney was tipping the scales after that night in denver. >> well, astonishing, several things were going on there, i don't think president obama likes these debates. i don't think he really respected governor romney at that point, probably thought he might have been a bit of a lightweight, also a feeling president obama wanted to feel presidential and above it all and all those things combined for a horrific performance, even his aides would admit that and he would admit that at this point. it put romney back in the race when many of us thought he might be a goner. >> just a few short weeks later hurricane sandy hit and president obama had an opportunity to appear with new jersey governor chris christie, sort of certifying a bipartisan image before the election which a lot of people thought tipped the scales back to him. >> certainly a break for the election, sandy hit the northeast. it's always good for presidents to appear presidential, to appear to be doing things. to have that happen a

election. on november 6th president obama beat republican rival mitt romney to win a second term. what other stories topped the list and what do they tell us about the world we live in today. john fund is a columnist for "national review magazine" he joins us to weigh in on this. john, good to see you. merry christmas to you. >> thank you. kelly: we hope you're doing well. we know the top story was the election, it was a bitter fight to the end, president obama winning re-election. what does it tell us, though, about the campaign of mitt romney, and the mood of the country then, because we had so many other big stories affect the outcome of the election. >> well, this election, i think, was a very curious one, because president obama made some history. normal lee an incumbent with an economy that weak and no particular prospects of it getting better wouldn't have won re-election. but president obama was able to take advantage of i think dramatic stumbles on the part of mitt romney, the 47% line and various other things, absolutely. kelly: does it surprise you that mitt romney's people

to support mitt romney, to try to defeat president obama. they didn't happen. but at the end of the day, they'd still rather make money than win a political argument. so i think that the republicans are potentially making a mistake, holding out this idea that somehow that's the time to use this leverage. that said, you know, having that paralysis -- and that's what we're in right now -- we're in the middle of political paralysis where there's distrust on both sides. there's no -- there's no -- and if you're in the republicans, politically, i sort of get where they are, they see no win for them. any compromise they make with this president is a political problem for them in their own base, their own political bases. you know, that's why you're not seeing the great tip o'neill/ronald reagan moment here because there's no way voters would actually reward the compromise, at least on the right. >> hey, chuck, this is sam. first of all, it looks beautiful there. secondly, you talked about the bitterness -- >> reporter: it's a little chilly, but i'm not going to dpl complain. >> don't complain. you

or whether to campaign for mitt romney. s there's a lot of question about whether he would get the o challenge from the very popular mayor of newark, at least popular in some circles cory booker. >> what's interesting about this is that cory booker put out a web video which is how all the a politicians announce these days. he said i'm interested in obnning for senate. that job isn't actually open at this point. senator frank lautenberg holds that seat, a long-time democrat. he has not telegraphed what he's going to do. when cory booker put out this statement that he was going to run lautenberg said there's a time for politics.au it's next year. that's when i'll address it. lautenberg is 80 years old. he's in his 80s. he might decide to run.h he could be... decide to keep that challenge afloat there. we could either be talking about a democratic primary or booker is very well known. he's got a strong national presence.el so this is somebody who could clear the field for the democrats but either way it will be competitive. republicans always say that they think he's within their sights
